Project Renew Landmine's & Thank You VVN Donors For Mr. Tuan's New Arm!

Picture
22.11.2011 - 36 years after the War there are still casualties of War & it is heroes like Project Renew who help when & where it matters. So, I was very excited to finally meet the the wonderful team from Project Renew - Hien Ngo, Nguyen Phu & Chuck Searcy. These lovely gentlemen took time out of their day to show Angela Rauscher & I what heroes do on a daily basis in the Quang Tri Province. We could see how well organised their organisation was; from planning ahead & teaching children about land mine safety, programmes on educating people on cluster bombs, clearing land mines & helping land mine victims as well as creating programmes to help these victims with sustainable living, such as cows & mushrooms.

I was very moved when they introduced me to Mr.Pham Quy Tuan & his family. Mr Pham Quy Tuan lost both of his arms two yeas ago when he was trying to find scrap metal. When I asked why he risked so much when he knew the dangers, he said that he had to look after his family to feed them. When you are so poor that you risk killing yourself to put food on the table, there is no way you can criticize this man but only take pity on him & the situation he was in. After loosing his arms, you can also tell that his family is also impacted... Mr Pham Quy Tuan's brave wife not only looks after him, but she also looks after their two children. I could only imagine the mental stress that Mr. Tuan had to endure, being fed & clothed by his wife but also not being able to help with his children too. Both Mr Pham Quy Tuan & his wife are proud people just like you & me, wanting to get on with life the best way they can & to help provide for their children.
Despite their predicament, they did not ask for money or expect any help and I saw much dignity and no anger or resentment about the legacy of the American War in Vietnam (Vietnam War) which had caused him to lose both of his arms. You can read all about Mr.Pham Quy Tuan on this site: http://www.landmines.org.vn/news/scrap_metal_collector.html

Once I had got back to Project Renew's headquarters, I asked if there was anything I could do to help. Hien told me that he was trying to raise funds of approximately $500 US to buy a functional prosthetic hand, plus training. I immediately I knew this was something I could help with as I had £320 GBP on me, which were donations from the Vietnam Volunteer Network & Reaching Out.

Hien has been great at keeping me updated & as you can see Mr. Tuan has had his casting done and after TET he will have a brand new prosthetic arm. I look forward to working with Project Renew on their sustainable cow & mushroom projects.
