Dan Winthorpe: 3 Peaks Challenge 14th July 2012!

Picture
Thank you for visiting my page. I am looking for you generous people to sponsor me! My challenge and the very worthy cause are explained below.

The Challenge!

The 'National Three Peaks Challenge' is a mountain-endurance challenge in the UK, with a history of over 40 years. My rather ambitious aim is to climb the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales within 24 hours! The total distance is around 42 kilometres and the total ascent is nearly 10,000 feet. My challenge will take place on 14 July 2012.

The Charity

During my time in Vietnam I have become involved with the charity 'Vietnam Volunteer Network'. This is an organisation which offers support to orphanages within Vietnam. They provide aid such as medical equipment, food and vitamin supplies, educational books and toys to the children.

One of the orphanages the charity is affiliated with is Trung Tâm Nuôi Dưỡng Bảo Trợ Trẻ Em Gò Vấp Orphanage in Ho Chi Minh City, just around the corner from where I live. This is where around 230 children call “home” and where I have been given the opportunity to help out.

As well as providing a loving home for healthy kids, a large proportion of the children suffer from severe medical conditions such as hydrocephalus (more commonly known as 'water on the brain'), cerebral palsy, body malformations and other physical and mental disabilities. These are either attributed to malnutrition or 'Agent Orange' (the chemical herbicide dropped during the Vietnam War.)

My time at Go Vap has been spent mainly between the three terminally ill wards, also known as the "waiting rooms" as the kids are living on borrowed time. For these children, the orphanage supported by 'Vietnam Volunteer Network' ensures their short little lives are filled with as much love and happiness as possible. These brave kids have taught me more about courage and gratitude than I could ever teach them.

For the children whose conditions are not as advanced, the charity seeks medical treatment to maintain their health and physiotherapy to improve mobility and blood circulation. This increases the children's immune system and reduces the risk of secondary illnesses such as pneumonia.

For the healthy kids who are often orphaned due to poverty, the orphanage offers a safe environment for education and development, allowing them to dream a brighter future after having a difficult start in life.

If you'd like to know more about my challenge, the charity or the amazing kids of Trung Tâm Nuôi Dưỡng Bảo Trợ Trẻ Em Gò Vấp Orphanage , please give me a shout, get in touch with me on Facebook or visit www.vietnamvolunteernetwork.com

Otherwise I ask you to dig as deep as you can. Your money will make a direct and real difference to these kids & the other orphanages & Agent Orange Peace Villages that the VVN supports.

Thank you.

Dan
